I’m a little obsessed with finding the perfect surface to paint on. Working horizontally, with the painting on the floor, negates the possibility of using canvas since urethane pools in the unsupported middle of the stretcher. In searching for an ideal painting surface, I have worked on MDF, plywood, plexiglass, styrene, and even wire mesh. Evening Sun is from a series painted on fibreglass. I asked a canoe builder to make these panels for me, and since I often find inspiration on canoeing trips, this creates another connection between material and image.
